Art Pac Pacific isn't a faceless multinational, it's just me... Gary Weare. I have been in the advertising and print industry since completing my Diploma in Graphic Design and Communication in 1972.
After leaving art college, my first job was with an advertising agency in Wolverhamptom in the UK. I left art college thinking I was God's gift to advertising. My new employer thought otherwise. I was brought down with a big crash when I was assigned to the creative art of making tea, vacuuming the studio and emptying the waste bins. It was then I realised I may not have been God's gift to advertising after all. God had obviously made some huge mistake!
Having worked with several ad agencies and a large newspaper group in the UK, I migrated to Australia in 1980. My first job was the position of Creative Director with an advertising agency in Wollongong, NSW.
Moving on . . . . .
I escaped the mainstream and went bush for a couple of years producing artwork for greetings cards and exhibitions. However, I got back into advertising in 1983 when I moved to Cairns. There I teamed up with Don Milner and Natalie Gurieff. Together we formed, what became, at that time, Cairns' largest advertising agency handling mainly tourism and real estate accounts.
In 1989, looking for life in the slow lane, we - Teresa, myself and three children made the move to Maryborough, Queensland and have been here ever since.
Arriving in Maryborough, I spent a short time working with the Chronicle (as it was called then), the region's local daily newspaper before starting Art Pac Pacific in 1990.
In my time working in this industry I have seen many changes. I was trained when PC's were still science fiction. I have seen many design studios and advertising agencies come and go in this region, but Art Pac Pacific is still here for the long haul.
Now in its 29th year, Art Pac is still going strong in what is a very competitive industry.
"I guess I must be doing something right!"
